IRGC claims supertanker hit two mines on 'illegal' route; CENTCOM calls claim false

2026-08-31 · shipping

The IRGC said a 'noncompliant' supertanker using what it called the illegal southern route of the strait struck two naval mines, caught fire and was brought to a stop; it did not name the vessel, flag or crew. CENTCOM denied that any ship had struck a mine and called the statement an IRGC attempt to intimidate shipping through disinformation, while not denying that vessels had been hit by projectiles. The claim, issued early on 31 August Iran time, came three days after CENTCOM declared the shipping lanes mine-free.
