UAE halts all trade with Iran after saying Iranian missiles targeted shipping

2026-08-18 · policy

The UAE defence ministry said two ballistic missiles launched from Iran were aimed at maritime traffic, with one falling inside UAE territorial waters; the foreign ministry then halted 'all trade, commercial exchanges and financial transactions with Iran' until further notice. Iran's foreign ministry denied firing and called the incident a 'false flag' operation. The halt was announced late on 18 August UTC, already 19 August in the UAE, and cut Iran off from what had in recent years been its largest trading partner.
