Islamabad MOU's 60-day window lapses; Trump rules out extension, threatens Oman

2026-08-17 · diplomatic

The 60-day negotiating window of the June Islamabad memorandum expired on Monday 17 August without a US-Iran deal; Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei ruled out talks on an extension, saying the US had violated the memorandum from the start, and Trump told reporters he would not extend the ceasefire. In an unaired Fox News interview, later confirmed by the White House, Trump said the US would bomb Oman if it 'gets in the way', referring to Oman's talks with Iran on administering the strait. Iran said the same day it had reached an understanding with Oman on a transit-route map; Brent futures settled 2.7% higher at $90.87.
